Electric. If forced to choose a singular word to describe the atmosphere of State Farm Arena during an early afternoon on May 17, 2026, the day of the home opener for the Atlanta Dream, that word would be it. The Dream faced the Las Vegas Aces in front of a sold-out crowd of 17,044 people in the arena that is also home to the Atlanta Hawks. While the Dream went on to lose in a one-point contest, the real winners of the day were the fans in attendance.

Atlanta played without two of their starters in Rhyne Howard (concussion protocol) and Brionna Jones (right knee surgery recovery), while Vegas had two on their injury report with Janiah Barker (concussion protocol) and Dana Evans (lower right leg). Missing Howard for the first time in the season after a 2-0 start would prove to be yet another adjustment for the Dream, who were still trying to find their footing as a team burdened by slow starts to begin the year.

The start of this matchup was anything but slow as both teams battled in the paint. Newest Dream player Angel Reese saw a familiar matchup in two-time MVP A'Ja Wilson, while Allisha Gray found herself guarding anyone from Chelsea Gray to Jackie Young as she and Jordin Canada switched. The Aces pulled away in the second and third quarters, going up as many as 19 points. The game appeared to be slipping away from Atlanta as newest Aces player Chennedy Carter scored 20 points off the bench through three. When asked about the addition of Carter to the team, Dream head coach Karl Smesko described the guard as "Another dynamic scorer, not that they needed more. She's somebody who's looked great to start the season. She's super fast, can get downhill, gets 'em out in transition."

However, the Dream saw a boost from the likes of Indya Nivar and Madina Okot in the fourth quarter. Nivar brought the energy in under four minutes as she pressured the offense and dished to her teammates. Okot secured her first career double-double and finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds in a little under 15 minutes off the bench. The Dream outscored the Aces 21-10 in the final period, with the Aces securing the win off of a Chelsea Gray pull-up fadeaway jumper in the paint and then a Gray on Gray display of defense as Chelsea poked the ball away from Allisha during the Dream's final possession and attempt to win.

The nail-biter of an ending during the home opener ensured fans in the packed arena were on their feet and invested in every possession. The eruptions when Te-Hina Paopao knocked down a corner three off of the assist from Reese to pull the Dream within one and then Canada's steal and score to put the Dream up one were akin to those of the Hawks playoff appearances prior to 2020.

Fans showed out in the Dream's 45th consecutive franchise sell-out and were rewarded with quite the show, from Bow Wow/Dem Franchize Boys performing at halftime to a both teams performing when it mattered most.
