Comprende?

As you all know, the Spanish language is taking the NBA by storm! From Noche Latina to Spanish-speaking players, the benefits of knowing some of the language can help you communicate with all types of fans! Our very own Al Horford is from the Dominican Republic and fluent in Spanish. In this section, I will post a basketball-related Spanish word every month, so you can brush up on that español! Vamos!

According to Bob Rathbun, the players you should especially watch are Jeff Teague and Josh Smith.

Baloncesto - or Basquetbol (pronounced ball-on-sesto or baskit-bowl) - Basketball (kinda obvious, no?)
The latter term is slang, influenced by the English term. So, this should be the first word you know! Baloncesto is the more standard form.
Ex. Me encanta el baloncesto! Translation: I love basketball!
Puntos (pronounced poon-toes)- Points
Very basic, yet very useful.
Ex. Cuantos puntos tiene Joe Johnson? Translation: How many points does Joe Johnson have?
Mate (pronounced ma-tay)- Dunk
This is probably considered slang but it doesn't hurt to know!
Ex. Has visto el mate de Josh Smith contra Orlando? Translation: Have you seen Josh Smith's dunk against Orlando?
